Harlan Anderson

Harlan Winfield Anderson, 96, Lynwood, CA formerly from Christine, ND passed away Sunday, May 29th 2016, at Lakewood Regional Medical Center, Lakewood, CA. He was born on January 7, 1920 to Sam and Melvina Anderson on the family farm near Christine, ND. This was the same home that his grandfather, Anders Anderson, homesteaded in 1870. Harlan attended school in Christine, ND and Wolverton, MN.

After graduating from high school he borrowed money from his dad and his uncle Andrew to go to California and attend aircraft school. After completing aircraft school he was hired by Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, CA. He worked there until he was drafted into the army in 1944. Harlan was in the 96th Infantry Division that landed on Okinawa on April 1, 1945. 19 days later he was wounded by a sniper while digging a fox hole. After being discharged from the army, he met Pearl Strom and they married on June 21, 1947. In 1949 he was able to be rehired at Douglas Aircraft; so they moved to California.

In 1950 they bought a small lot in Lynwood, CA and his uncle David built their house. This continues to be their family home after 66 years. They had two children: Nancy and Mark.
In the early 60's Harlan and his family enjoyed visiting his cousin Roy's place on the Colorado River and it was there that he learned to water ski. He enjoyed water skiing until the age of 88.
In 1982 he retired from Douglas Aircraft. He spent his time going to the Donut Shop, taking care of his many rose bushes and building many remote controlled airplanes.

He loved Jesus and was very active at church; serving as a deacon and ushering. Harlan also served on the board of Mission to Children for 42 years. In 2009 he was part of a World War II Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

He will be greatly missed by his immediate family: wife, Pearl; daughter, Nancy Miller; son, Mark (Barbara) Anderson; grandchildren: Erin Miller, Cathy (James) Slawinski, Clara Anderson, Mathew Anderson; and his sister Elaine Carlson. He will also be missed by extended family, too numerous to name here. Harlan will be most remembered for his patience, gentleness and steadfastness.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Sam and Melvina Anderson, his sisters Carmen Agrimson and Betty Johnson.

A visitation for Harlan will be one hour prior to funeral services.

His Funeral Service will be held at Eagle Valley Evangelical Church, Christine, ND on July 16th, 2016 at 11:00.

Burial will be at Eagle Cemetery, Christine, ND.
