Ada J. Edmonds, age 91, of Moorhead, Minn., died Friday, July 6, 2007, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.
Ada Josephine Thomson was born Dec. 9, 1915, to Arnt and Alma (Ydstie) Thomson in Hillsboro, N.D. She attended school there and was valedictorian of Hillsboro High School's class of 1932. She graduated from Moorhead State Teachers College in 1934 and embarked on a career in education that took her to one-room schools and small-town classrooms in New Salem and Hoople, N.D.; and Brooten, Dalton, and Rothsay, Minn.
Ada married Roy Edmonds in Moorhead, Minn., Dec. 28, 1948. He farmed east of Hillsboro, where they lived until she resumed teaching in 1958. Over the next sixteen years she taught the upper grades in Antelope Consolidated School near Mooreton, N.D., and Midway Consolidated in Inkster, N.D.; seventh grade in Streeter, N.D.; and sixth grade in Amenia, N.D., part of the Central Cass School District.
After retiring in 1974, she and Roy moved to Fargo. He died in 1975. She moved to The Fairmont in Moorhead in March 2007.
Ada is survived by a daughter, Nancy Edmonds Hanson, and son-in-law, Russ Hanson, Moorhead; granddaughter, Patricia Hanson, Fargo; son, Gary (Michele) Edmonds, and grandson, Kenneth, San Diego, Calif. She also leaves a special cousin, Lois (Larry) Gangnes, Harwood, N.D.; their children, Laurie (Paul) Ill and Mark (Melissa) Gangnes, Fargo; and Ada's honorary great-granddaughter, Bethany. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Tilman, Albin, and Orlin Thomson; husband, Roy; and sister-in-law, Irene Sandvig.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Brent Gangnes Memorial Scholarship Fund at Oak Grove Lutheran High School, Fargo.
