Alaila Ovedia Josephine Melbye was born July 31, 1906, in Atlanta Township, Becker County, near Hitterdal, MN, to Anton and Jenny (Oss) Melbye. She was raised in the Hitterdal area where she graduated from high school. Alaila attended Moorhead (MN) State Teachers College for one year.
Alaila was united in marriage to Joseph Hanson on June 10, 1926, in Hitterdal. They owned and operated a restaurant as well as a lefse factory in Hitterdal.
Alaila worked at numerous occupations over the years, but spent the majority of her career as a bookkeeper for the State of Minnesota Treasurer's Office, in St. Paul.
Alaila moved to New Hope, MN, several years ago to be closer to her family. She died peacefully Thursday, September 6, 2012, at Northridge Care Center, New Hope, at one hundred six years of age.
Alaila is survived by her daughter, Barbara Strub, New Hope; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; parents, Anton and Jenny Melbye; daughter, Phyllis Hansen Hallum; brothers, Floyd, Harvey, and Richard Melbye; and a sister, Alpha Melbye Winden.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be Friday, September 28, 2012, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
A Memorial Service will be Saturday, September 29, 2012, at 10:30 AM, in Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal.
