Alene J. Owens, 83, Fargo, ND, died Sunday, December 26, 2004, in Elim Care Center, Fargo.
Alene Jane Smith was born July 21, 1921, to Clyde and Alvida Smith in Lemmon, SD, where she grew up and graduated from high school. Alene attended nurses training at Lutheran Deaconess, Chicago, IL, and went on to work as a nurse missionary for the Lutheran church from 1944 to 1965.
In December of 1966, Alene married Harold Sminesvik. They lived in Opportunity, MT, until his death in 1968. On April 9, 1970, Alene married Abner Owens. They made their home in rural Horace, ND, where they farmed until retiring in 1975. Following retirement, they continued to live on the farm. Abner died in October of 1992 and Alene moved to West Fargo, ND. In 1998, she became a resident of Elim Care Center.
Alene is survived by two sisters, Cleo Strobel, Salem, OR, Marjorie (Leonard) Marquette, Rocklin, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a brother, and two sisters.

Funeral Service: Wednesday, December 29, 2004, 10:30 AM, Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Fargo.
Interment: Island Lake Cemetery, Wolford, ND
