Alice Mary Eldred, 89, died peacefully on July 2, 2017, surrounded by her family.
Alice Mary Holler was born on April 1, 1928, in Browerville, MN, the beloved daughter and little sister to her parents and three older brothers. She attended Browerville High School where she fell in love with Leo Eldred. They were married in 1948.
Alice and Leo had three sons by the time they settled on the north side of Moorhead, MN, in 1962. Here they made their home and became fixtures of the community for the next fifty years.
In every respect, Alice was devoted to her family. She was chief homemaker, cook, cleaner, delegator and organizer (all the while staying fashionable). She had a passion for entertaining. Like her mother before her, she liked to feed people - - a lot! She was an excellent baker and her banana cream pie is legendary.
During the second World War, Alice worked as a bookkeeper at the local creamery. She took great pride and joy in managing her ledgers and budgets ever since. In the 70s, Alice worked as the neighborhood "Avon Lady," a job she was well suited for and especially enjoyed; organizing her business and acting as consultant for so many. She was an avid reader, checking out multiple books at each of her weekly trips to the library as well as subscribing to books by mail. This was one of her greatest joys.
Alice loved to travel with her husband, Leo, and with family and friends. They frequently wintered in south Texas. She played bridge on a regular basis, and enjoyed games of cards and dominos any chance she could. More than anything, Alice loved her family. She was selfless in her devotion and always put their needs ahead of her own. She was a tremendous support system, never missing an opportunity and often traveling a great distance to be there for all. Over the years, she transformed from a strict straight-laced mother to a grandma overflowing with candy, sweets, and a great variety of homemade treats.
About six years ago, Alice suffered a stroke. The limitations it left imprisoned her ever since. Now she is free. She was greatly loved by many and will be missed by all. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; and husband, Leo.
She is survived by her three sons, their wives, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Michael and his wife Randa have two sons, Grant (DeAnna) and Matthew; as well as five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jonah, Madison, Ethan and Ava. Tom and his wife Kathe have three children, Abbey (Brent), Nick (Jacque) and Leslie (Corey); and four grandchildren, Bella, Emma, Jacob and Mason. Chris and his wife Lynne have two children, Emma and Adam.
Visitation for Alice will be Friday, July 7, 2017, from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM, in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead, and will be followed by her funeral service at 2:30 PM, also at St. Francis. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
Arrangements by Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead.
