Alice M. Bartels

Alice Margaret Bartels was born December 22, 1915, to Henry J. and Mary (Dooley) Bartels, in Winner, SD. After attending St. Mary's Elementary School, she continued at Winner High School, where she graduated in 1933.

For two years, Alice served as Deputy Registrar of Deeds for Tripp County. She worked in the State Employment office one year at the University of South Dakota, after which she earned her BFA degree in Music.

For the next two years, Alice taught instrumental and vocal music at Irene, SD, for K-12 grades. She then worked at the G.A.O. in Washington, DC, for five years. Alice returned to South Dakota and taught vocal music K-12 in Vermillion. The next year, she earned an MA degree at the University of Iowa.

In the fall of 1949, Alice joined the faculty at Moorhead (MN) State College, where she continued to teach piano and music education for thirty-three years. She retired in 1982. She was granted three sabbatical leaves for further study.
During her years at MSC, Alice continued her education by attending summer school sessions and workshops at several major universities from coast to coast, to enrich her teaching. She judged piano contests in Minnesota and North Dakota for many years and conducted workshops for the Minnesota Elementary Music Educators. As the elected board member of the Western Division Minnesota Music Educators, she was instrumental in developing the state's music curriculum.
Alice served on a number of committees at MSC and was elected by her peers to serve on the Faculty Senate, Advisory Committee to the President, C.C.I, and the President of I.F.O.
One of her most rewarding activities was as faculty advisor for eleven years to the Newman Club, Catholic Student organization. She also served as Faculty Advisor to the honor society, Alpha Lambda Delta, for many years. Her article, "A History of Class Piano" was published in the Music Journal.
Alice held memberships in the NEA, MEA, MEME, MENC, MTNA, and MUPhi, national music sorority. She was actively involved in the local Piano Teachers Organization, serving in offices and presenting programs.
Alice died Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND, at ninety-four years of age.

She is survived by her nephew, Paul (Clara) Fiedler, California; a niece, Elena Fiedler, England; a number of great-nephews and great-nieces; plus d
