Alice M. Sheldon, 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, August 20, 2006, at her home at Fargo's Pioneer House. Alice was born November 2, 1911, in Lake Mills, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Susie and Knute K. Tweeten. She grew up on a farm at Comstock, MN, graduated from Moorhead High, attended Concordia College and graduated from Moorhead State. She taught at Perley and Hawley, MN, for eleven years before her marriage to Merton L. Sheldon Jr., June 10, 1941. They farmed at Blanchard and Mapleton, ND, for over 50 years, wintered in Arizona, and celebrated 58 years together.
What Alice did she did with whole-hearted enthusiasm and lifelong commitment. She was active in Bethel Evangelical Free Church as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, choir member and director, occasional organist, and women's retreat leader. Her devotion to Jesus Christ, as well as love of teaching inspired her to lead Good News Clubs in Mapleton and West Fargo for many years. She served 20 years as 4-H mom and leader in the Prosper area. She belonged to Mother Singers and Farm Bureau chorus, was proficient in every homemaking skill, loved her work as a farm wife, and was still winning Scrabble games three weeks ago.
Mrs. Sheldon is survived by her children, Fay (Walter) Quanstrom, Big Rock, IL; Fuller (Gloria) Sheldon, Mapleton, ND; Ruth (Steve) Guthrie, Scottsboro, AL; Susan (Jonathan) Sheldon-Davies, Loughton, England; and MaryBeth (Tim) Person, Lake Stevens, WA; fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; ten nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Sheldon Merriman. She was predeceased by Merton; her son, Luther; and her sisters, Lovilla Nichol, Kathryn Massey and Olga Peet.
