Long time Moorhead, MN, resident, Al Schluender, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in Casper, WY, of pancreatic cancer at the age of eighty-six.
Alois William Schluender, the eldest child of ten, was born on November 3, 1921, to Casper and Hyacinth Schluender, in Osakis, MN, where the family farmed. Al served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a pilot instrument flying instructor from 1944 - 1947. Following his military service, Al took employment with Standard Oil of Indiana at the terminal located in south Moorhead. He retired from Standard Oil in December of 1981 after thirty-four dedicated years of service.
In June of 1948, Al married Caroline Francis Neubecker of Casselton, ND, at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Casselton. Al and Caroline had three children, Carolyn, David and Mary. Caroline, Al's wife, died in November of 1981, and their daughter, Carolyn died in April of 1959.
Following his retirement, Al provided stewardship for St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead, as a Mass server and trainer, sacristan, extra ordinary minister of the Eucharist, lector and collection counter. He also served in pastoral care at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, and the Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo, ND. Al gave generously of his time, talent and treasure. He visited many terminally ill and made friends wherever his busy day would take him. Al felt it was an honor to serve others and humbly gave of himself. He was an inspiration to everyone he touched, especially his family and his church family at St. Joseph.
He is survived by his son, David (Cynthia), St. Paul, MN; a daughter, Mary (Richard) Haataja, Casper, WY; four brothers, Leo (Pat) and Richard (Judy), both of Minneapolis, MN, Raymond (Margaret), St. Cloud, MN, and Robert (Ardella), Osakis; and one sister, Loretta (Harland) Becker, also of Osakis; five grandchildren, Brian (Heidi) Haataja, Minneapolis, MN, Lisa (Dan) Scott, Casper, WY, Jennifer (Paul) Kehler, Eagan, MN, John (Anna Marie), Big Lake, MN, and Joseph Schluender, St. Paul; and seven great-grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah Haataja, Emily and Jacob Scott, and Jackson, Thomas and Matthew Kehler.
In addition to his wife and daughter, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Emil, Walter and Joseph; and a sister, Agnes Kaas.
Visitation: Sunday from 4 - 8 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Funeral Mass: Monday, May 12, 2008, at 11 AM, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead.
Burial: St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery, Casselton.
