Alvin "Maynard" Olson, 84, Dilworth, MN, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at the Veterans Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Alvin Maynard Olson was born July 3, 1922, at a farm west of Staples, MN. He received his education at a country school. His father was killed in an automobile accident when he was 10 so he took over many of the chores on the family farm. The family moved into town when he was in his teens. He joined the CCC's when he was 17 to help support his mother.
Alvin worked on various farms and then enlisted in the US Army on Nov. 13, 1944. His basic training was at Fort Hood, TX. He served with the Occupational Forces and was stationed in Hawaii during the attack on Japan. He was honorably discharged Nov. 27, 1946.
He met his beloved Gloria (Presler) in 1942. They were married on August 16, 1947, at Staples.
Alvin worked in various jobs to support his family. He was a police officer in Staples. They moved to Motley, MN, while he was employed by the Northern Pacific Railway in Brainerd, MN. After he was laid off from the railroad they moved to Cambridge, MN, where he got a job cooking at the state hospital. They then moved to Dilworth in 1964. Alvin worked for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Railroad, retiring in 1982. He was a cook on the wrecking crew and his buddies called him "Ole".
Alvin loved fishing, hunting, and gardening. He generously shared his produce with his neighbors.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Gloria, Dilworth; a son, Glen (Yvonne), Fargo; two daughters, Illona Hall, Mounds View, MN, and Tammy (Timothy) Smith, Dilworth; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
