Anna “Ann” Hersch, 102, formerly of Moorhead, MN, passed away on April 7, 2025, at Elim Nursing Home in Fargo, ND.
Born on October 15, 1922, in Benson, Saskatchewan, Ann was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Jutt) Wetch. In 1930, she relocated to Wilton, ND, and later resided in Shields, ND. In 1940, she married Ralph Hersch, and together they farmed in the Shields and Raleigh, ND areas before moving to Bismarck, ND.
While in Bismarck, Ann worked as a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward, where she managed her office with dedication, ensuring that all financial records balanced meticulously at the end of each day. Often times, this meant staying late into the evening and walking home in the dark.
In 1955, Ann proudly received her U.S. citizenship papers in Bismarck, an accomplishment she reflected on with a blend of pride and humility. She often said she was a bit embarrassed to have her photo in the local newspaper considering she grew up in North Dakota.
Ann had a profound love for music, particularly for dancing the polka, which she enjoyed with her husband Ralph and friends during lively weekend gatherings.
After relocating to Fargo, Ann joined Blue Cross Blue Shield, working in their underwriting department until her retirement in 1984. She played an integral role in the office, which was initially located on Broadway before moving to a larger facility on 13th Avenue in Fargo.
A devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ann contributed her time and talents to the Christian Mothers organization and served as a Eucharistic Minister during Saturday evening Mass.
In addition to her professional and community involvement, Ann cherished the outdoors, taking pleasure in snowmobiling at the lake and winter ice fishing. Known for her spirited enjoyment, she entertained friends and family with her own ice fishing house, many memories were made as Ann and the girls often caught more fish than the men!
Ann also had a passion for knitting and crocheting, often selling her handmade items at church bazaars. A memorable incident involved her husband, Ralph, allowing fellow parishioners to take her items, reasoning that they must have needed them.
In her later years, Ann faced health challenges that limited her ability to participate in church activities and hobbies that once brought her joy.
Ann is survived by her daughters, Diane (Fred) Green and Nadine Goldader; six grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; one son, Harlan; son-in-law, Robert Goldader; six sisters; and four brothers.
