Arne Garness, 83, Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, in Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.
Arne Hartwick Garness, the son of Svale A. and Christiana (Jacobson) Garness, was born at rural Borup, MN, on February 6, 1928. He grew up in the Borup-Ada, MN, area, and graduated from Ada High School in 1946. Arne served his country in the US Army, overseas in Korea, in 1946 and 1947.
On May 13, 1949, Arne married Murreen Jensen. They made their home in Moorhead, where Arne attended and graduated from Concordia College. In 1955, they moved to Elbow Lake, MN, where Arne taught math and coached wrestling. In 1959, they moved to Appleton, MN, where Arne continued teaching and coached football. He received his Master's in 1959, from the University of Wisconsin.
In 1959, the family moved to Moorhead, where Arne joined the faculty of Concordia College Mathematics Department. In 1963, he became Concordia's computer center director. Arne served in the computer department of American Crystal Sugar in Moorhead for three years. In 1979, Arne joined the faculty of Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where he served in their computer department, until he retired in 1990.
Arne was an active member and served as financial secretary of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, for many years. He was a member and treasurer of the Moorhead Kiwanis Club, and a member of Moorhead American Legion. In recent years, they were members of Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead, where Arne enjoyed the fellowship of the men's breakfast club.
Arne is survived by his wife, Murreen, Moorhead; daughters, Carolyn (Lon Cook) Garness, Snohomish, WA, Rochelle (Scott) Evert, Moorhead, and Marilee (Jeff) Pederson, Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Amber and Veronica Evert, and Alyssa, Dustin and Sonja Pederson; and great-grandson, Brayden Evert-Bakken. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marilee; and brothers, Adron, Selmer and Kennen.
