August A. Klundt

May 12, 1920 — December 5, 2013

August "Auggie" Klundt, 93, Moorhead, MN, passed from this life on Thursday, December 5, 2013, in Essentia Health, Fargo, ND.

August Adolph Klundt was born on May 12, 1920, to Wilhelm and Elizabeth (Losing) Klundt, in Beulah, ND. August graduated from Beulah High School in 1938.

On July 21, 1941, he married Ida Zeller. They made their home, for a time, in northern Ohio while August worked on local farms, for a furniture company, and at the Willow Run Ford Bomber Plant in Michigan making B-24 Liberator bombers for WWII.

August was drafted into the US Army in 1944, where he served in the Pacific Theater with the 136th Army Infantry. August was part of the campaign to liberate the Philippines and was preparing, with his regiment, to invade Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped, ending the war. He then served as part of the occupation army, and was discharged in 1946.

After the war, August returned home and opened a grocery store in Dunn Center, ND, in 1948, which he operated for 14 years. In 1962, he moved his family to Moorhead, where he worked for Nash-Finch Company until his retirement in 1985. In 2006, he and Ida moved into Eventide at Fairmont, Moorhead.

August had many hobbies including small woodworking projects, handcrafting jewelry and rings, and building frames for Ida's paintings. As a boy, he loved to hunt on the prairies of western North Dakota. August was known for being a kind man and was never heard to say a bad word about anyone else.

August is survived by his three sons, Bill (Joyce)Klundt of Sauk Centre, MN, Larry (Pat) Klundt of Bismarck, ND, and Jay (Carolyn) Klundt of Sun City, NV; five grandchildren, Allison Klundt, Hilarie (Steve) Tolifson, Melanie (Shannon) Lennie, Kristen (William) Sargent, and Robert Klundt; five great-grandchildren, Bradley, Jack, Noah, Madison, and Emilee; and one sister-in-law, Olga Zeller-Heth.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Ida; two brothers, William and Edward; and five sisters, Rose, Ella, Louise, Sophia, and Christine.
