Benjamin Roth, age 90, was called Home to heaven on Wednesday, November 3, 2010. He was born on January 7, 1920, in Kulm, ND, (McIntosh County), the fifth of eight children to Henry and Lydia (Breitling) Roth. Both were descendents of Russia.
Benjamin attended eight years of schooling in Wishek ND. At the age of 16 he was sent out to look for work landing a job as a farm hand for a grain operator in Grandin, ND. He also did dairy farm work in Wild Rice, ND and Rosemont, MN until he was employed by the Great Northern Railroad in December of 1944. For thirty eight years he worked in the round house and on the tracks in Breckenridge, MN, and Page, Minot and Ayr, ND. Eventually, he moved to Casselton and worked until retirement in 1982.
Benjamin was the Casselton man known for his tomatoes in the area. He gave them away as an act of love towards anyone who visited with him. Benjamin enjoyed people and was recognized as a person who performed service "above and beyond the call of duty". He gave so much of himself and shared his faith in Jesus as His personal Lord and Savior with sincerity. He was a warm-hearted man with lots of love to give; always wearing a sincere smile and offering a firm hand shake or hug.
Benjamin was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Fargo, now Calvary at Village Green in Moorhead MN serving as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday school teacher, Awana leader and greeter. He will be missed by many, especially by his adopted family, Mike and Donnie Strei.
