Fargo

Bernard Raymond Bates, a cherished member of our community, was born on July 4, 1942, in Wahpeton, ND, to Bertrum and Marcella (Schmidt) Bates. This day not only marked his birth but also set the stage for a life that would celebrate family, friendship, and a passion for life.

Growing up in Dilworth, MN, Bernie was a fun student who graduated in 1960. His journey of love began when he married and welcomed two beautiful daughters, Crissy and Cathy. The family moved across west central Minnesota, creating a tapestry of memories in towns like Dilworth, Lake Park, Hitterdal, and Glyndon. When he first worked in Fargo he worked at Fargo Excavating. Bernie dedicated 35 years of his life to working as a fiberglass sprayer at Silverline Boats, Pleasure Products, later known as Riverbend Industries. Here, he contributed to the crafting of boats, tanks, jiffy johns, and numerous other products, leaving a lasting impact on those he worked with.

On May 9, 1981, Bernie's heart found its partner in Rose Schindler when they exchanged vows at Assumption Catholic Church in Barnesville. Together, they built a loving home where they embraced the joy of parenthood once more, welcoming two sons, Bernard and Eugene, into their family.

An enthusiast of car racing, Bernie pursued his passion both as a spectator and a participant at Buffalo River Speedway. He was an avid follower of NASCAR and cherished his moments watching WWE Wrestling. In his leisure time, he loved to fish and go camping. You could often find him pulling the lever on the one-armed bandit or cheering for Gene during his car and Baja races, showcasing his unwavering support for his loved ones.

Bernie is survived by his beloved wife, Rose, of Fargo, along with his four children: Crissy Bates of Eureka, NV; Cathy Bates of Flom, MN; Bernard (Beth) Bates of Fargo; and Eugene (Jenna) Bates of Fargo. His legacy continues through his seven grandchildren: Amber, Natalie, Matthew, Allie, Anna, Evan, and Kaia, as well as four great-grandchildren: Christopher Freier, Cienna Freier, Carter Bates, and Rayna James. He is also remembered fondly by his sisters, Maxine (Duane) Boehing of Fargo and Delores (HT) Bates of Vergas, MN, along with numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, and many friends.

Bernie was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Ava Marcella Bates; his brothers Sylvester and Charlie Bates; his nephew, Greg Bates; niece Kim Bates, and his beloved parents.

As we reflect on Bernie’s life, we remember the laughter, encouragement, and love he shared. His warm spirit and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Let us celebrate the beautiful life that he lived and hold onto the fond memories forever in our hearts.
