Bernice Kondos Eickstadt, age 86, of Moorhead, MN, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2011, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead.
Bernice Evelyn Hovdestad, daughter of Anton and Olivia (Thompson) Hovdestad, was born in Moorhead on April 20, 1925. She grew up, received her education, and graduated from high school in Moorhead. During World War II, she worked at Fairmont Creamery in Moorhead. Afterwards, she taught Sunday school, worked at Woolworth's, and was director of the Moorhead Senior Citizens Center.
On December 30, 1945, Bernice married Christ J. Kondos in Moorhead, They made their home there with their daughter, Jeanne, which was always filled with warmth, laughter, love, visiting, and wonderful food. Bernice and Christ were soul mates who were happily married for thirty years. They were charter members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead. They traveled to visit family, for Christ's railroad meetings, and while he played softball for Shorty's Shoe Shop. He passed away on July 24, 1976.
Bernice married Louis Eickstadt on May 18, 1985. They also lived in Moorhead. They enjoyed fishing together. Louis died on November 3, 2008.
In August of 2008, Bernice became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home, where she had lived since, due to her health.
Bernice loved God, her family, children of all ages, music, dancing, cooking, and, of course, her lipstick, high heels, and purses. She was a great storyteller, whether in person or on the phone. She always loved to hear about everyone and their adventures. Bernice also had many exciting adventures of her own, living life to its fullest. She truly loved the family dogs, Pookie and Carmen. Daily, she looked forward to their visits, which were full of hugs and kisses.
Bernice is survived by her daughter, Jeanne (Bruce) Peters, Moorhead; granddaughter, Christine (Kevin) Hannestad, Moorhead; stepgreat-grandson, Zachary Hannestad, Moorhead; brothers, Harold Hovdestad, Desert Hot Springs, CA, and Stanley (Wendy) Hovdestad, Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews who lovingly called her "Aunt Sissy". She was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; three sisters, Cora Peterson, Mary Ann Wayman, and Florence Hovdestad; and four brothers, Andrew, Selmer, Robert, and Russell Hovdestad.
Bernice wanted you to know that she loved you all, she is always near, and simply wishes for you to never forget her.
Memorial service: Friday, November 18, 2011, at 2:30 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Inurnment will be at Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
