Boyd D Holcomb, 92, Fargo, ND, formerly of Sun City, AZ, and Crookston, MN, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, after a brief battle with cancer.
Boyd Donald Holcomb was born to Herbert and Nellie (Huston) Holcomb on November 8, 1915, in Detroit Lakes, MN. Boyd attended a rural one-room school, graduating at age sixteen. As a teen, Boyd did odd jobs, including caddying, raking lakeshores, chauffeuring, truck driving, and working on his parents' farm. Boyd worked for the Production Credit Association (PCA) in Detroit Lakes as a bookkeeper from April 1934 until mid-1938.
In 1937, Boyd married Helen Verna Nyman of Wolf Lake, MN. He attended a management school in 1938, then went back to the PCA as office manager at Willmar, MN, for about a year. Boyd also managed several co-op stores at Saxon and Ladysmith, WI, and worked as a federal meat inspector at South St. Paul, MN, and an investigator of price controls and rationing for the St. Paul OPA (Office of Price Administration).
Boyd was Chief Accountant for the Central Co-op Wholesale at Superior, WI, from 1946 to 1950. He then managed a co-op store at Palisade, MN, from 1950 to 1952. In 1952, Boyd went to St. Paul as an intern at the CPA firm, Hines and Wilkerson. In 1954, Boyd married Evelyn Margaret Danielson of Ely, MN. Through the years, he had taken night school and correspondence courses, as well as a few college courses; later, he took a fast-paced six-month CPA course and passed the CPA examination in 1956.
Boyd bought accounting businesses in Crookston and Thief River Falls, MN. He joined with Gerald Knudson Accounting of Crookston in 1967 to form the partnership of Holcomb, Knudson and Company. Soon after, the partners opened an office in Grand Forks, ND, and later with additional partners, opened offices in other locations, including Bemidji, Moorhead, and Hallock, MN, and Devils Lake, ND.
Boyd lived and worked in Crookston until 1978, when the firm opened an office in Alexandria, MN. At that time, the family moved there, where Boyd served in the capacity of administrative officer of the partnership. In October 1980, Boyd retired from the
Boyd enjoyed golf, gardening, reading, studying, traveling, bowling, exercising, and working on his computer with voluminous self-designed spreadsheets. He was also a volunteer in the local Sheriff's Posse of Maricopa County, AZ.

He was preceded in
Visitation for Boyd will be Friday, August 29, 2008, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
His funeral will be Saturday, August 30, 2008, at 11 AM, in Community Baptist Church, Fargo.
Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.
