Bryan J. Opskar, the son of Erling and Betty (Arndt) Opskar, was born February 14, 1973, at Princeton, MN, where he grew up and received his education. While in high school he played hockey, football and track. He graduated from high school in 1991.
After high school Bryan played junior hockey in Anoka, MN, for a year and then in Fargo, ND, for a year. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, for a year and a half, and played hockey for the Cobbers. After attending Concordia, he worked at Tires Plus in Fargo and then returned to Princeton to work.
In 1998, Bryan enlisted in the US Marine Corps. After training, he was assigned to the 3rd LAR Battalion in Twentynine Palms, CA. In March of 2003, his unit took part in the Iraq invasion. He returned to California and in February of 2004, was assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd LAR Battalion in North Carolina. In March of 2005, his unit was sent to Iraq, where Bryan was killed in combat on July 23, 2005. He was 32 years old.
On December 31, 2004, Bryan was united in marriage to the love of his life, Leandra Dougherty, in Fargo. Leandra and Bryan had known each other for twelve years.
In addition to his wife, Leandra, Bryan is survived by his parents, Erling and Betty of Pelican Rapids, MN; a brother, Christopher (Rebecca) Opskar, Brooklyn Park, MN; grandfather, Ervin Opskar, Enderlin, ND; grandmother, Dorothy Arndt, Fargo; Leandra's parents, Lauri and Leo Dougherty, Missoula, Montana; and Leandra's brother, Kristopher (Jaime Peterson) Dougherty, Sartell, MN.
