Carl Gustave Anderson was born December 28, 1932, to Edwin S. and Laura (Stokes) Anderson in Dilworth, MN. He was one of twelve children. He loved his country very much and, following in the shoes of his older brothers, enlisted in the Army on October 29, 1952. He proudly served as Private 1st Class in the 529th Field Artillery BN, in Germany and also in Korea during the Korean War. He was discharged on September 30, 1960, and re-enlisted into the Air Force Reserves for a short time in 1963.
After discharge, Carl went on to serve his community as Chief of Police in Dilworth, and with the Water Department for the City of Fargo, ND, for thirty-four years until retirement. He continued his service with his many, many volunteer activities with the American Legion Post 2 in Fargo; including being elected and serving as Post Commander from 1989-90, being elected Chef de Gare of the 40 & 8, and being honored as a 50 year member of the American Legion. Carl was also a Life Member of VFW and a member of the AmVets.
Carl also had a great love of family. He married Janice "Boots" (Lobitz) Anderson on April 13, 1958. Together they raised two daughters, Sherry and Belinda. He loved camping, baseball and fishing, as well as watching his family in their many activities, such as basketball games, baseball games or bowling. He always had a video camera in hand to capture those precious moments.
Carl passed into eternal life on Saturday, May 25, 2013, with his loving wife at his side, at the VA Medical Center Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, at eighty years of age.
Carl is survived by his wife, Janice "Boots" of fifty-five years; his daughters, Sherry (Clif) Scheer, Hatton, ND, and Belinda (Mike) Benson, Fargo; five grandchildren, Kristi Hovland, Grand Forks, ND, Candy (Damon) Herzog, Fargo, Tanya (Garrett) Gruwell, Yucca Valley, CA, Nikki (Travis) Hersrud, Glyndon, MN, and Derek (Jen) Hovland, West Fargo, ND; eleven great-grandchildren, Tabitha Vigen and Kyle Gruwell, Alex, Taylor, Brady, Jacob and Isabella Herzog, Lucas and Gracie Mae Hersrud, and Jayden and Drew Hovland; his brothers, John (Karolyn) Anderson, Roswell, NM, and Art Anderson, Dent, MN; his sisters, Lavina Ratcliff, Richmond, IN, Helen Dalen, Fergus Falls, MN and Elda Mae Smith, Pomona Park, FL; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Laura (Stokes) Anderson; his father, Edwin S. Anderson; his brothers, Jake, Roy, Ed, Burt and Robert, and his sister Agda.
Visitation for Carl will be Wednesday, May 29, 2013, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
His funeral will be Thursday, May 30, 2013, at 2 PM, in Dilworth Lutheran Church.
Burial, with full military honors, will be Friday, May 31, 2013, at 2 PM, in Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.
