Charley Olson

August 30, 1932 — March 13, 2010

Charley Olson, age 77, Perley, MN, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 13, 2010, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Charley is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Catherine; children, Catherine Mason, Charley (Sandra) Olson, John (Suzann) Olson, Carol (Greg) Vigesaa, Joe (Sandy) Olson, and Cheryl (Larry) Skjoiten; 12 grandchildren; and many close friends.

Charley was born August 30, 1932, at Ada, MN, and was raised in Gary, MN. He was the son of Karl and Louisa (Merkins) Olson.

Charley served in the US Army as a Communication Staff Sergeant, stationed at Fort Lewis, WA. Charley and Catherine Arends met at a doughnut shop in Ada while Charley was home on leave. They were married July 23, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ada.

Charley worked as a mechanic for a number of employers before starting his own automotive shop, Olson's Repair, on his farm site. During the forty-five years that Charley worked as mechanic, he developed the reputation of being able to fix virtually anything mechanical that was put before him. He was known for his ability to fix what he was working on, rather than as a person who could simply replace parts. His personal pride in a job well-done, his integrity and fairness, and his commitment to giving his customers a quality job for the money were hallmarks of his business. Most recently he worked on the Paul Houglum farm near Perley.

Charley's interests included hunting, collecting Hamm's beer items and German WWII memorabilia, and buying and trading guns and anything related to firearms. He loved to visit and was known for his story-telling and sense of humor.

Charley had great pride in his family and loved being a grandfather. He showed particular attention to each of his grandchildren, which made each of them feel individually as if they were uniquely important and that their feelings, interests, and opinion
Charley was a truly kind and loving person to all that knew him and will be missed more than words can say.
