Clarence A. Markegard

Clarence Alfred Markegard was born July 19, 1920, in Moorhead, MN, to Alfred and Jennie (Johnson) Markegard. Clarence was raised in Moorhead where he graduated from high school.
Clarence volunteered for the US Army and entered on June 3, 1942. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines with the 135th Field Artillery Battalion. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a Bronze Star as a result of his service. Clarence was discharged on December 26, 1945, with the rank of Sergeant Tec-4.
Clarence returned to Moorhead where he married Jean McPherson on September 18, 1953. They made their home in Moorhead. Clarence ran a printing press for a number of area businesses, including Pierce Company, Kaye's Printing, Red River Scene, and Diercks's Printing. He retired in 1982.
Clarence was a member of the American Legion. He was also a life member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. Clarence was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.


Clarence died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, at eighty-nine years of age.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Jean, Moorhead; one son, Al (Phebe) Markegard, Moorhead; two daughters, Kathy (Clint) Sletten, Casselton, ND, and Susan (Rolland) Porter, Moorhead; four grandchildren, Jessica, Amy, Sara and Raliegh; and one sister, Mary
He was preceded in death by a son, John; two brothers, Herbert and Ernest; and one sister, Gladys.
Visitation for Clarence will be Monday, July 27, 2009, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. The funeral will be Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at 11 AM, in Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, Moorhead. Burial, with ful
