Clifford Vernon Bjerke was born April 28, 1914, in an upstairs bedroom at the Bjerke homestead in Clark County, near Lily, SD. His parents were Ole and Petra Bjerke. Clifford attended rural school near his home and graduated from the eighth grade.
Clifford married Gladys Mildred Warwick on June 1, 1937, in the Crocker, SD, Lutheran Church parsonage. They made their first home in Milton, WI, where he attended welding school. Clifford even invented a particular procedure that was patented. They also made their home in Janesville, WI, before returning to South Dakota.
Clifford was the foreman of Charlie Blackman's Potato Ranch until he bought his own farm in Clark County, in 1949. In 1962, he and Mildred moved to Moorhead, MN. Clifford worked as a Steam Engineer at Concordia College, Moorhead, for many years. Even though he officially retired in 1989, he continued to fill in on a part-time basis when the need arose.
When Clifford and Mildred moved to Moorhead, they became members of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Clifford was still a member at the time of his death. They moved to Serenity Assisted Living in Dilworth, MN, and Mildred preceded Clifford in death on February 7, 2013.
Clifford died peacefully at Sanford Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND, at one hundred years of age.
Clifford is survived by four children, Joan (Wallace) Fegert, Battle Lake, MN, Phyllis (Jerry) Peterson, Polson, MT, Alice Miller, Sioux Falls, SD, and Philip (Lucy) Bjerke, Fulda, MN; twenty grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and nineteen great-great grandchildren.
Clifford was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-five years, Mildred; son, Daniel Lee Bjerke; parents; five brothers, Olaf, George, Paul, Gunder, and Carl; eight sisters, Martha Bjerke, Pauline Fromdahl, Tillie Gross, Grace Haugom, Cora Olson, Anna Obermeier, Olga Haugom, and Martha Bjerke; son-in-law, Bob Miller; grandsons, Willie Peterson and Daniel Troy Bjerke; great-granddaughter, Baby Girl Thompson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Clifford will be Tuesday, July 1, 2014, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
The funeral will be Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at 10 AM, in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
Burial will be Wednesday at 3 PM, in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery West, Clark County, SD
