Colleen R. (Keck) Polka, 86, of Moorhead, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead.
Colleen was born November 24, 1925, in Doyon, ND, to Erick and Anna (Steen) Keck. She grew up in Doyon graduating from high school there in 1943. Following graduation, she attended North Dakota Agricultural College for one year, and then transferred to Minot State College, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education.
Colleen married Frederick Polka on May 31, 1948, in Doyon. She taught elementary school in North Dakota and Minnesota for many years, retiring from her teaching career, in Moorhead, in 1987.
Colleen will always be remembered for her joyous and gracious spirit. Even if you couldn't see her in a room, you knew she was there when you heard her infectious laugh. She enjoyed spending time with the family she loved, spending summer weekends at Lake Carlos, and visiting her four inseparable sisters.
Colleen is survived by her children, Cheryl (Douglas) Hanson, Evergreen, CO, Neil (Laurie) Polka and Robert Polka, all Moorhead; four sisters, Mildred Olson, Evergreen, CO, Lorrayne Lillehaugen, Grand Forks, ND, MaryAnn Thal, Lakewood, CO, and Betty June Karaim, Mayville, ND; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick; daughter, Teresa; and son, Thomas.
