Curtis I. Hagness, 85, Moorhead, MN, died Friday, July 19, 2024, in Eventide on 8th, Moorhead.
Curtis Irving Hagness, known to all as Curt, was born April 1, 1939, in Dahlen, ND, to Clifford and Thea (Olsen) Hagness. He graduated from Fordville High School in 1957, where he played basketball, baseball and football. After high school he enrolled at Concordia College in Moorhead. He furthered his education at NDSU, earning his master’s degree in education. Following college, Curt taught in Tioga, ND for three years, before accepting a position with Oak Grove High School in Fargo. On October 9, 1965, Curt was united in marriage to Doris Hammer, and they welcomed two sons, Jamie and Jon.
For over 40 years, Curt was a history teacher, coach, and mentor to many kids. He continued his service to his country as part of the Army Reserves and during the summers early on in his career, he worked for an insurance company as their hail adjuster. He spent 37 years at Oak Grove and coached football and track for many of those years. In 1982, Curt earned the honor of “Coach of the Year”, following a state championship in football. His dedication was unwavering when it came to the kids he taught and coached. Curt retired from Oak Grove in 2002 and in 2011, he was inducted into the Oak Grove Hall of Fame.
During his teaching career, Curt also became a licensed realtor in the FM area. His outgoing nature made it easy for him to make connections and allowed him to make many new friends. He was a storyteller and loved to share them with whoever would listen.
After retirement, Curt enjoyed getting together with his breakfast group at the Frying Pan, and his Wednesday morning Kiwanis group. He loved attending anything that involved Oak Grove or Concordia College.
Curt was a dedicated and faithful husband, father and grandfather and will be remembered and missed by his wife of 58 years, Doris; his sons, Jamie (Keri) and Jon (Linda); along with four grandchildren, Dusty, Taylor, Kate and Connor; and “all of his Oak Grove kids”.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
