Dale Ronald Cowden, age 87, of Dilworth, MN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Bethany Nursing Home in Fargo, ND, surrounded by love and the enduring memories of a life well-lived.
A celebration of Dale’s life will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Dilworth Lutheran Church, Dilworth, MN, with Rev. Elizabeth Hiller officiating. He will be laid to rest later that day at 2:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation one hour prior to the service.
Dale was born on June 11, 1937, in Dilworth, MN, to Robert and Blanche (Halvorson) Cowden. He spent his childhood in Dilworth and graduated from high school in 1955. From an early age, Dale’s quiet strength and dedication to family, faith, and community were evident, shaping a life full of purpose and kindness.
On November 8, 1957, Dale married the love of his life, Avis Engebretson, in Pelican Rapids, MN. Their partnership was one of unwavering love and support. A few years into their marriage, Dale proudly served his country when he was drafted into the Army, and the young couple made their first home together in Texas. Following his service, Dale and Avis returned to the Midwest, planting deep roots in Valley City, ND, and later back in Dilworth, where they raised their two beloved children, Pam and Bob, in a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
Dale spent many decades with Burlington Northern Railroad, working in roles such as clerk, yard master, and ticket agent before retiring in 1997. His meticulous nature and commitment to excellence were mirrored in his passion for woodworking. Known for his craftsmanship, Dale’s handiwork became part of the fabric of Dilworth, a testament to his talent and creativity.
A lover of sports, Dale devoted countless hours to coaching American Legion Baseball and cheered faithfully for his Minnesota Twins. He and Avis spent many years watching their grandchildren play various sports, always their biggest cheerleaders and never missing an opportunity to show their support. Their encouragement and pride were unwavering, and they made every effort to celebrate each accomplishment, big or small – they cherished the moments to watch their grandchildren grow and succeed.
Summers were marked by treasured moments at Island Lake, where he and Avis camped, fished, and took road trips, creating memories that their family and friends will carry forward. In retirement, Dale’s workshop behind his home became a haven where he could immerse himself in woodworking projects. Hunting, fishing, and time spent with family and friends brought him immense joy.
Though Dale faced health challenges in his later years with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia, his enduring spirit, humor, and love for those around him shone brightly.
Dale is deeply missed by his children, Pam (Randy) Vadnais of Audubon, MN, and Bob (Nicole Thelen) Cowden of Dilworth, MN; five grandchildren, Jordan (Kylie) Vadnais, Sean (Samantha) Vadnais, Nicole (Randall) Rockwell, Jared (Megan) Cowden, and Stephanie Cowden; and six great-grandchildren, Hailey Vadnais, Koa Vadnais, Kaycie Martin, Kennedy Roach, Lincoln Cowden, and Reese Cowden. He is also survived by his sister, Judy (Wayne) Koepplin of Sioux Falls, SD; brother-in-law Arnold Leshovsky of Park Rapids, MN; sister-in-law Yvonne Cowden of Roseau, MN; brother-in-laws Juel (Charlotte) Engebretson of Pittsburgh, PA, Elwood (Becky) Engebretson of Austin, TX, Collin (Elizabeth) Engebretson of Austin, MN, Mark (Colleen) Engebretson of Breckenridge, MN, and Steven Engebretson of Pelican Rapids, MN; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends.
