Dale W. Smith, 89, of Moorhead, MN, died on Thursday, August 10, 2017, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Dale William Smith was born September 9, 1927, the son of Charles and Kathryn (Adams) Smith, in North Litchfield, IL. He lived with his family in Hillsboro, IL, until 1931 when they moved to Felton, MN. In 1942, they moved to California and returned to Felton in 1945. At the age of 18, Dale joined and served in the U. S. Army until his discharge in 1947,. He then returned to Felton.
In August of 1947, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hill. They moved to the George Landsverk farmstead where he began farming. On June 25, 1976, he was united in marriage to Iretta Scott. They made their home on the Scott family farm where Dale continued to farm until retiring in 1994. After retirement, he worked for Menholt Farms until 2007.
Earlier in life he started with a dairy herd and after selling the dairy cattle, began developing a herd consisting of 300+ head of registered Angus cattle. He mentored his daughter and two grand-daughters in breeding development for the past 5 years. In addition to animal husbandry, he raised small grains, beans, corn, sunflowers, potatoes and sugar beets
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Moorhead Masonic Lodge #126 where he was an Honorary Past Master, the recipient of the Hiram Award, and York Rite, the Order of the Eastern Star #164 where he was a Past Patron, the American Legion, Lions, DFL and the Eagles. He was also an active supporter of the Felton Rescue Squad and Felton Community Club.
Dale enjoyed playing cards, especially Pinochle and Felton Smear, playing horseshoes, horseback riding, and traveling. His greatest passions in his life were his family and farming.
He is survived by his, wife, Iretta; children, Robert D. (Lenore) Smith, Hopkins, MN, Michael (Lavonne) Smith, Audubon, MN, Donald (Denise) Smith, Dilworth, MN, Leretta (Steve Jerde) Smith, Glyndon, MN, Daletta Kratzke, Borup, MN, and Scott (Deb) Smith, Wolverton, MN; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Howard and Charles; and sisters, Della Lakeman, Lucille Yeager and Delores Moore.
A Visitation for Dale will be Sunday from 3 PM to 5 PM, with a Prayer Service and Masonic Service at 5 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
His Funeral Service will be Monday, August 14, 2017, at 11 AM, in Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead.
Interment will be in Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead.
