Daniel A. Grohnke, 86, Moorhead, MN, passed away on May 21, 2014, in Fergus Falls (MN) Veterans Home.
Daniel Arnold Grohnke was born on July 1, 1927, in Lidgerwood, ND, to Albert and Anna (Trittin) Grohnke. He graduated from Lidgerwood High School and attended the University of North Dakota, receiving his degree in Education. Dan served in the US Army during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1947.
Dan married Doris A. Tanke on October 25, 1952, in Grafton, ND. The first two years of their marriage, Dan and Doris lived in Dilworth, MN where Dan taught school and coached basketball. The couple then moved to Moorhead, where Dan taught at Moorhead High School and coached wrestling and the sophomore football team. "Coach" was an avid sports fan, attending Moorhead High athletic events long after his children had graduated. He was a Vikings fan. He loved fishing and spending time at the family cabin on Lake Lida when the kids were growing up. Dan loved his family most of all and was willing to go the distance to keep in touch with his children and their families who now live in New Richmond, MN; Wisconsin; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Phoenix, Arizona; and Moorhead.
When Dan began to slow down, he moved to River Pointe of Moorhead Senior Care and, finally, the Fergus Falls Veterans Home. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the "angels" that served Coach in his last years.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Doris; four children: Debbie (Gary) Bakke, Dan (Denise) Grohnke Jr., Dianne (Michael) DiLiberto, and Allyson (Kevin) Boe; and four grandchildren, Daniel and Michael Bakke, and Emily and Megan Grohnke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Randall, Erhart, and Robert Grohnke; and three sisters, Esther Strege, Evelyn Boetcher, and Leona Hooge.
