David J. Hanson, 89, died Thursday, October 31, 2024, in his home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
David was born on August 10, 1935, in Minneapolis, MN, and raised by his adoptive parents, Walter and Jennie (Meling) Hanson in St. Cloud, MN. He played varsity basketball at St. Cloud Tech, graduating in 1953. He attended St. Olaf College and St. Cloud State University. On June 22, 1957, he married Beverly Trones. Together they had three children, Greg, Jeff, and Julie. They moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1966 where David began a long career as office manager and treasurer for both Moorhead Construction and Abbott, Arne, and Schwindt. He retired in 2015.
David was an avid golfer and member of the Moorhead Country Club, where he once served on the Board of Directors. He was the chairman of the annual Sweet Potato Golf Tournament for over 30 years. Some of his best memories were playing golf with his friends from the King of the Hill club. He was the proud owner of three hole-in-ones.
David’s faith was an important part of his life. At Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, he served on the church council. He also was a den leader for the Cub Scouts, and Scoutmaster of Troop 633 in Moorhead.
In 1999, he married Carol Zimmerman. They enjoyed a number of winters in Mesa, AZ. She died in 2020.
In 2020, David moved to Riverview Place, where he spent the remainder of his life. He accepted the challenges of aging gracefully, once enjoying a race with his granddaughter on his motorized scooter. He loved good conversation, watching the Vikings, and singing along to good music.
David is survived by his fiancée, Kay Munsch; and children, Jeff (Helen) Hanson, Fargo, ND, and Julie (Scott) Sandland, Moorhead; grandchildren, Jason Hanson, Mankato, MN, Steven Hanson, Fargo, David Porter, Fargo, Sarah Sandland, Fargo, Rebecca and Alex Sandland, Moorhead; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Donte, Willow, Violet, Melanie, and Kaia; and his cat, Maddie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol; son, Greg Hanson; and his sister, Virginia “Ginger” Schiro.
