David M. Stensland

David M. Stensland, 67, of Fargo, ND, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in his home.

David Melvin Stensland was born October 16, 1956, the son of Melvin and Eunice (Long) Stensland, in Moorhead, MN.  He attended St. Francis and George Washington Elementary, North Jr. High, and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1975.   He also attended East Grand Forks Technical College to learn semi-driving.  While in high school, David, worked for Don’s Car Wash and then went to work for Minnota Carbonic delivering dry ice to several Minnesota lake towns. 

On May 22, 1976, David was united in marriage to Ruth Berg in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.   In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s he worked for American Crystal Sugar.  He then started his truck driving career where he eventually worked for Berg Grain and Produce, Fargo.  In 1989, he was blessed with a daughter, Sarah, and once she got older, she would go with him in the semi. 

When his father died in 1994, David and Ruth took over the family farm.  Farming was his true passion and he farmed until he retired after the 2022 growing season.  After David quit driving semi in 2014, he worked for a couple of years as a valet driver at the Roger Maris Cancer Center. 

David was a season ticket holder for the Fargo Red Hawks Baseball team and enjoyed attending games.  He also drove a mini-modified race car at Buffalo River Speedway in the late 1980’s and 1990’s.

David was a very generous and giving person and good jokester.  He will always be remembered for his favorite phrases, “I never laughed so hard in my life”, “you should have seen the look on your face”, and “did you like that one”.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth; daughter Sarah and her wife, Dawn Greig; sister Peggy Wirth, North Beach, MD; brothers, Jeff Stensland and Mark Stensland, both of Moorhead; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Alvin and Glo Berg; brother-in-law, Richard Berg; and nephew, Adam Snyder. 

Memorials may be directed to Pontoppidan Lutheran Church or Homeward Animal Shelter. 

A Visitation for David will begin at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 20, 2023, followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.

The burial will take place in Oak Mound Cemetery, rural Kragnes, MN.
