Denise M. Askegaard

Denise Marilyn Askegaard, 59, died peacefully Thursday, August 18, 2016, at the family farm, rural Comstock, MN, surrounded by her loving family, ending a courageous battle with cancer.

Denise, oldest daughter of Charles and Donna (Getz) Askegaard, was born May 14, 1957, in Moorhead, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Hoff Lutheran Church, Rustad, MN. Denise attended school in Comstock, graduating from Barnesville High School in 1975.
While in high school, she played basketball and was very active in the pep club and other school activities. Softball was her favorite sport of the summer. She played on many local teams, usually with her mom, Donna. She coached her sisters', Pam and Sue's, local team, Comstock Farmer's Daughters and later played on other teams with them. When winter came, pool was her game. She played on many local teams, both women's and mixed, playing in many tourneys throughout the state.

After high school she worked as a dental tech and bartender/cocktail waitress. In 1981, she graduated from Joseph's School of Hair Design, Fargo, ND. She worked as a beautician for 15 years and was a bartender and cocktail waitress for 21 years, while finding time to drive sugar beet truck.

In 1993, she started working at Meritcare Medical Center, Fargo, as a case cart tech, setting up surgeries in the OR. This started her life-time dream of becoming a nurse and she graduated as a LP nurse from Northwest Technical College, Moorhead, in August of 2003. She later graduated from NDSU in December of 2008 with a degree in Bachelors of Science in Nursing and a minor in Psychology.

She worked on the TCU unit prior to transferring to the psychiatric unit at Sanford Medical Center until her illness forced her to resign.

She will be sadly missed and forever remembered by her loving son Jared (17) of Moorhead; faithful dog and companion, Max; mother, Donna; and sister, Sue (Steve) Suchla, both of rural Comstock; sister, Pam (Jim) Braton, Barnesville, MN; and brother, Dale, Valparaiso, IN; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Trevor; father, Charles; special cousin Ray; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

The family would like to thank all of the wonderful and caring staff in the oncology department at Sanford Medical Center and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their support and kindness. Thanks to all of the family and friends that have stopped by to visit or called with concerns during this difficult time.

A visitation for Denise will be Sunday from 6 PM to 8 PM, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Her Funeral Service will be Monday, August 22, 2016, at 11 AM, in Hoff Lutheran Church, Rustad, MN.

Burial will be in Hoff Lutheran Cemetery.
