Desiree Ann Brawders was born June 16, 1956, in Bottineau, ND, to Darrell and Jeanne (Farden) Brawders. Raised in Roseau, MN, she graduated from high school in 1974 and subsequently earned a teaching degree in Health and Physical Education from Moorhead (MN) State University. Desiree married Daniel Mickelson June 4, 1977 and they made their home in Dilworth, MN.
Desiree greatly enjoyed her years in youth ministry at Dilworth Lutheran Church, the Messiah Lutheran Church in Fargo, and at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Moorhead. She also worked as a Tobacco Prevention Coordinator for Clay and Wilkin counties where her accomplishments were recognized by the state of Minnesota. Desiree was also honored by Minnesota State University Moorhead with the prestigious Outstanding Alumni Award.
Desiree fought a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Her outlook on life was always sunny and full of good humor despite the devastating effects of her disease. She enjoyed good fellowship, Diet Coke, and chocolate with all of the staff, volunteers, and caregivers at Moorhead Healthcare Center where she had resided since August, 1998. Her most cherished moments were time spent with family, friends, and her two grandson's, Aiden and Owen.
Desiree died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND, at the age of forty-eight.
Desiree is survived by her life-long partner, Daniel Mickelson, Dilworth, MN; her daughter, Lindsey (Chad) Leach, Glyndon, MN; two grandsons, Aiden and Owen, Glyndon; her father, Darrell (Shirley) Brawders, Roseau; a sister, Darrelyn (Ken) Marx, Park Ridge, IL; brother, Peter (Patricia) Brawders, Horace, ND; and many nieces and nephews. Desiree was preceded in death by her mother M. Jeanne Brawders, and her brother, Jeffrey Brawders.
A gathering of friends will be Friday, March 25, 2005, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 6 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Her memorial service will be Saturday, March 26, 2005, at 10 AM, in Dilworth Lutheran Church.
