Donald Nicklay

Donald Edward Nicklay was born March 27, 1947, in Barnesville, MN, to Ruben and Hilda (Gaethke) Nicklay. Don was raised in Barnesville, where he graduated from high school.  Don entered the US Army in September of 1966, and served until his discharge in September of 1968.  Don was married to Janet Gabrielson, and they lived in Barnesville.  She passed away in 1987.

Don worked for many years as a custodian at Moorhead State College, Moorhead, MN. He married Mary Jo Anderson on January 8, 1995, in Dilworth, MN.  They made their home in Dilworth and he continued to work for Moorhead State College until his retirement.

Don was a member of the Moorhead American Legion, Fargo AMVETS, and Knights of Columbus.  Don liked to visit with people and frequently commented the American Legion was his second home.  He enjoyed car racing and attended many races at tracks in the surrounding area.  Don also enjoyed long walks with his dog, Jack.

Don passed away Thursday December 29, 2022, at Sanford Hospice House, Fargo, at 75 years of age.

Don is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; stepchildren, Brock (Heidi) Peterson, and Stacy (Jason) Roshek; six step-grandchildren; and a nephew, Rick Nicklay.

A graveside service, with full military honors, will be Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 10 AM, at Fargo National Cemetery, Harwood, ND.
