Donald Robert Deihl, Dilworth, MN, age 77 died Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, ND, after a long and courageous battle with heart disease and cancer.
Donald was born on October 26, 1930, to Dervin and Anna (Ritter) Deihl at Rolette, ND. In 1934, the family moved to Goodridge, MN, where he attended elementary school. In 1942, the family moved to Fosston, MN, where he attended high school. The family later moved to Viking, MN, where Don worked for Soo Line Railroad and played on a local Viking league baseball team. In 1952, he joined the Army and was honorably discharged in 1954.
Don married Eloise Windahl on June 19, 1954 in Viking. They lived briefly in Thief River Falls, MN and later moved to Holtville, CA, where Don worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, later operated a custom hay business, and began raising a family of six children. In 1966, the family moved to Fosston, where he farmed and worked at various local businesses. The family moved to Dilworth, in 1978, where Don worked in the trucking business. He also worked at Holsum Bakery in Fargo, until his retirement.
Don volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, church deacon, bus driver, and in many other areas as a parent and church member. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was widely known for his woodworking and vegetable growing business in Dilworth in his later years.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George and Bill Deihl; sister, Helen Chapiewski; and nephew Dennis Deihl.
He is survived by his wife, Eloise (Windahl) Deihl, Dilworth; children, Paul (Gail), Detroit Lakes, MN, Jeff (Kim), Deer River, MN, Brian, Glyndon, MN, Pam (Gregg) Iverson, Roseau, MN, Lorise (Rick) Lovato, Bulverde, TX, Cherie (Scott) Bratcher, Cape Cora
Visitation for Don will be Wednesday, August 27, 2008, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 6 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
His funeral will be Thursday, August 28, 2008, at 11 AM, in Faith Hope Love Church, Moorhead.
Burial, with military honors, will be Thursday at 4 PM, in Bethesda Cemetery, Newfolden, MN.
