Donna Mae Carlson, 86, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at her home, after a one week bout with cancer.
Donna and her twin sister were born on October 17, 1925, in Barrett, MN, to Joseph and Eldora (Lund) Thompson. Her mother died in childbirth and Donna went to live with Hans and Martha Johnson in Elbow Lake, MN, formally adopted by them in 1936. She attended school in Elbow Lake, graduating in 1942. She worked on the Journalism staff and even wrote the class song. She left Elbow Lake, moving to Moorhead to take her first job to work at the Kresge's 5 and 10 Cent Store in the infant's department. In 1945, Donna moved to Minneapolis to begin her career at Northwestern Bell, later transferring to Fargo. She worked for Northwestern Bell/AT&T for over 30 years, retiring in 1990.
Donna married Gordon Carlson in December 1951. They were married for 24 years and made their home in Moorhead along with their 3 children. Donna's love for her family was only superseded by her love for the Lord. She was an active member of Moorhead Evangelical Free Church and later Bethel Church of Fargo. She was a woman of honor and believed, "Your walk with the Lord must match your talk." Donna was a true prayer warrior for all of her family and friends. She invested in all of those she loved ensuring each one felt important, by being in tune with their passions and needs.
To her grandchildren she was known as the world's best banana bread baker, but to the world, WDAY TV dubbed her "The Krumkake Queen". She was known for making the Norwegian delicacy for the holidays, in excess of500 dozen every year, and giving them to her friends and her family; a feat for her since she had severe rheumatoid arthritis. (Google: "Krumkake Queen" and see mom.)
Donna is survived by her two daughters, Leanne (Mark) Engen, Redmond, WA, and Laneil (Sam) Skaff, Moorhead, MN; sister, Mildred Freeman, Greenville, SC; a very special nephew, Don (Naomi) Hanson, Anacortes, WA; a grand-niece Krispen Hanson, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Aaron (Alexis) Abbott, Moorhead, Lisa Roth-Skaff, Excelsior, MN, Nathan (Christine) Skaff, Jenna Skaff, both Moorhead, and Julie (Aaron) Stoe, St. Paul, MN; great-grandchildren, Tevon Cassatt, Alton Abbott, Carter and Krispen Roth, and Ella Skaff.
Preceding her in death were her son, Kevin Carlson; grandson, Matthew Skaff; twin sister, Dorothy Hoyt; sisters, Agnes Hanson, Hilda Westrom, and Esther Johnson; and brothers, Kenneth and Floyd Thompson, and Emil Johnson.
Donna led an amazing life and her passing was as peaceful and graceful as she. There will always be a void in our lives because her presence is gone, but we have enough memories to last a lifetime.
Memorials may be given to KFNW Radio or Bethel Church, Fargo.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 31, 2012, from 5-7 PM at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, with a prayer service at 7 PM. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at Bethel Church (2702 30th Ave. S.) Fargo, on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, a
