Dorothy Kippels, 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls, MN, on June 9, 2012.
Dorothy Ann Bogan was born July 26, 1914 to George and Irene (Treacy) Bogan in Ardoch, ND, where she grew up and attended school through 8th grade. She then attended boarding school at St. James Academy in Grand Forks, ND, and Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND. Upon graduation, she worked at a number of businesses in bookkeeping and accounting.
Dorothy married Joseph Kippels on November 4, 1937, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN. Together, they raised three daughters, Kathleen, Patricia and Margaret. They also owned and operated Waterman's Department Store at Center Avenue and 6th Street in downtown Moorhead until it was destroyed by fire in 1967. The couple then moved to their lake home and Dorothy opened The Corner Dress Shop on Washington Avenue in downtown Detroit Lakes, MN. She sold the store and retired in the mid-1980s.
Dorothy was ahead of her time as a notable businesswoman, serving as buyer and manager for the prominent Waterman's beginning in the 1940s. She was the first president of the Moorhead Soroptimist Club, a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters of America at St. Joseph's, and was instrumental in establishing Greater Moorhead Days as a community festival. Dorothy was known for her investments in the community, her service to the disadvantaged, and her incredible sense of style. She most loved entertaining family and friends at "the cottage" on Big Floyd Lake.
Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Rudd and Patricia (Jim) Johansen both Fergus Falls, and Margaret Mowery, Fargo; 8 grandchildren, Laurel, Joseph and Patrick Rudd, Cassandra Lien, Mary Kara, Theresa Cooley, Lara and Andrea Mowery; 22 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; a brother Tom Bogan; Fargo; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Lucille Gerlach; and brother, Robert Bogan.
Visitation: Tuesday, 5 PM to 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Funeral Mass: Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at 11 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead, with visitation one hour prior to funeral.
