Dr. Carol A. Weiss

January 22, 1953 — August 26, 2014

Carol Ann Weiss, 61, Fargo, ND, passed on peacefully on August 26, 2014, after fighting breast cancer for 6 years (metastasized for 4 years) with optimism and strength. She was surrounded by family, music, talking, and laughter as she left this world. She was at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and had received the most incredible treatment from Dr. Shelby Terstriep and her oncology team at the Roger Maris Cancer Center.

Carol was born on January 22, 1953, in Deer Lodge, MT, to Fred Comstock and Linnea (Selander) Comstock, and joined her older sister, Joanne. She moved with her family to Fargo, ND, in 1968, where she met a group of girls in her high school that she remained dear friends with the rest of her life. She graduated from Fargo North in 1971. She attended NDSU and received a dual degree in Childhood Development/Family Relations and Social Work in 1975. She then attended Northwestern Chiropractic College in Minneapolis, MN. It was there that Carol met and fell in love with her younger co-worker/student at the school, Joel Weiss.

The two met in 1978 and married August 9, 1980, at First Lutheran Church in Fargo. Carol had graduated with her Doctor of Chiropractic degree in April of 1980 and went on to teach at the college for two years while Joel finished school.

Joel and Carol purchased the Chiropractic Practice of Dr. Fred Comstock, Carol's father, in Fargo, in 1982. They quickly put down roots and were blessed by the birth of Jonathan Phillip Weiss on April 26, 1983, and Elizabeth "Betsy" Weiss on December 26, 1986. Being a mother was one of the greatest desires of Carol's heart. She cherished her time at home with both Jon and Betsy. She worked part time during both of her kids "before school" years and homeschooled Betsy for pre-school. She was so good at being a mom that she became a mother to many, opening her heart and her home to all.

Carol had a healing touch in her hands and an additional care for the soul of every patient. In her 32 years of chiropractic care she touched thousands of peoples lives, helping them experience both physical and emotional healing.

She also spoke at numerous civic, educational, and religious meetings throughout her life. She was an active speaker at Women's Aglow in the 80s, a Sunday School and Awana teacher at Believers Fellowship in the 90s, and an instructor at Sister Rosalind Gefre School of Massage from 2000-2005. She was a wonderful public speaker, always including a good story and making the room laugh.

Carol was an active member of her church, Believers Fellowship, and both gave and felt support from the pastors and congregation. She was always eager to talk about her faith and how her relationship with Jesus brought her joy. She loved to sing and praise the Lord through every circumstance.
Carol was also one who loved traveling. As a young person, she road-tripped from Washington State to the East Coast with her friend, Lee. She traveled all over the country with Joel, Jon, and Betsy when the kids were young and took many more extensive trips with her daughter, Betsy. They visited Paris, Belgium, Spain, and New York and always made sure to bring home gifts for everyone she could think of.

After receiving her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2009, she was faced with a choice. How would she respond? Echoing the joy and optimism she'd chosen to embrace throughout her life she decided she was going to throw a party for her first chemo. The parties kept coming as the chemo sessions grew in number. She made quite a name for herself in the infusion center for her themes, food, laughter, and for her tiaras and boas.

News of her "party" approach spread through the Fargo cancer community and was truly inspiring to hundreds, maybe thousands. She was asked to share her message through a Sanford commercial, as a feature in the Forum, in the cancer survivor's book "No Lumps, Thank You," and she brought an entire room of women to their feet as her inspiring words were the grand finale of a Sanford breast cancer retreat. Most importantly, though, it was her everyday interactions with every single person she saw; smiling, being hopeful and uplifting, complimentary and caring to each and EVERY person she met.

She was truly one of a kind.

She is survived by her husband, Joel Weiss; son, Jonathan Weiss; daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Weiss; sister, Joanne Holm; and many nieces, nephews, and extended/adopted family. She was predeceased by her mother, Linnea (Selander) Comstock (1980); father, Fred Comstock (1994); and nephew, Jonas Hendrickson (2012).

A visitation service will be held Friday, August 29, 2014, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN. Her funeral and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 30, 2014, a 1 PM, in Believers Fellowship Church, Moorhead.

Carol was always a colorful and bright person, even in the most difficult moments. Please feel free to not wear black to the celebration of her life. Her legacy lives on in the kindness, laughter, optimism, and hugs that we share with each other now. Thank you for sharing with us.
