Dr. Daryl Ostercamp

Dr. Daryl L. Ostercamp, 83, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, September 6, 2015, in Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Daryl Lee Ostercamp was born February 5, 1932, to Otto and Ruth (Lee) Ostercamp in Garner, Iowa. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1949. After two years at Waldorf Junior College, Forest City, IA, he enrolled at St. Olaf College, graduating magna cum laude in 1954 with majors in chemistry and mathematics. Earning an M.S. degree in chemistry in 1954 from the University of Wisconsin, he became an instructor at Luther College, Decorah, IA. In 1956, Daryl returned to graduate study at the University of Minnesota, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Awarded a Ph.D. in 1959, he spent the following year as a postdoctoral fellow at Penn State University. Daryl joined the chemistry department at Concordia College, Moorhead, in 1960, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 2002.

Daryl married Janet Louise Freed on June 21, 1958, in Madison, WI. During his academic years, he and his family were privileged to live in overseas communities: College of Science, Mosul, Iraq, where he was a Fulbright Assistant Professor in 1964-65. Four years later he was an NSF Science Faculty Fellow, 1969-70, at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, England. He went on leave for three years, 1977-1980, to serve as Professor of Chemistry, University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. His 1992-3 Concordia Sabbatical was spent as Visiting Professor, Bar-llan University, Ramat Gan, Israel.

Daryl was awarded the 1967 Mondamin Teacher of the Year, Nere Sundet Professor of Chemistry, and Flaat Distinguished Scholarship Award by Concordia College. He valued both teaching and research. He advocated the life-long skills of hard work and persistence. During his tenure at Concordia, he published thirty articles.

Daryl served on the church councils of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, both Moorhead. He served as vice-president of the Churches United for the Homeless in its first three years, 1986-1989.

Daryl enjoyed gardening, raising gladiolas to share with his neighbors, making sauce from the apples from the tree in the backyard, and doing crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet; his two sons, Stephen (Marie-Francoise), Little Kingshill, Buckinghamshire, England, and The Rev. Daniel (Kristin), Webster, SD; four grandchildren, Etienne, Pierre, Zachary, and Coribeth; his brother, Donald (Genevieve), Dayton, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Cavanaugh.

Memorials are preferred to the Ostercamp International Scholarship Fund, Concordia College or Lutheran World Relief Refugee Services.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 10, 2015, from 5 PM to 7 PM, with a Prayer Service at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

The Funeral service will be Friday at 11 AM in The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead.

Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, Moorhead.
