Duane E. Karlstrom

Duane Karlstrom was born to Signe (Jordahl) and Emil Karlstrom on July 21, 1934, in Fargo, ND. He passed away in MeritCare Medical Center, Fargo, on June 4, 2010, at the age of 75, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Duane graduated from MN State University Moorhead (MN) Campus School. He attended college at Minnesota State University Moorhead. While in school, he was involved in music, athletics, and art. Some of his fondest childhood memories were fishing and hunting excursions with his Uncle Clarence.
Growing up on his parents' farm south of Moorhead, Duane began his love for farming. At the age of 10, he cleared his own 10 acre plot to raise and harvest onions. At 14, he began driving his father's beet truck to the factory. For years he drove a school bus in the winter months and eventually owned and operated his own school bus. After developing this strong work ethic at such a young age, farming continued to be a life long career for Duane, eventually farming with his own sons on the family farm.
Duane was always looking for ways to make farm equipment perform more efficiently through modification. He won three awards from American Crystal Sugar Co. for inventing improvements for sugar beet production. Duane also served on the Bethesda Lutheran Church Council, Evergreen Memorial Cemetery Board, Kragnes Elevator Board, and the Farmers Home Administration Board.
Duane was a kind and gentle man who always had a smile and a story to share. Laughter certainly followed him as well, as he often had a joke to tell. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed simple times spent with family and friends.
On May 2, 1953, Duane married Darlene Roselle Keller. Together, they raised their four children on the family farm.
Duane expanded his circle of family to include a loving stepfamily, when he married Shyrl Elaine Kvamme-Kreps, on August 28, 1991. They made their home in Moorhead. In the winter months they enjoyed walking, reading, and visiting with family and friend
Duane is survived by his loving wife, Shyrl; two sons, David (Cindy), Moorhead and Kent (Susan), Moorhead; two daughters, Kim (Keith) Dickelman, Longmont, CO and Kay Hilde, Moorhead; three stepsons, Steve (Barb) Kreps, Moorhead, Keith (Erin), Fargo and Ma
Visitation: Monday from 5 - 7 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Funeral: Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 1 PM in Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead.
Burial: Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Moorhead.
