Duane R. Engle, 83, of Fargo, ND, died Saturday, May 31, 2014, in Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo.
Duane Rodger Engle was born February 8, 1931, the son of Roy and Alvina (Holte) Engle, in Rogers, ND. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1949. In 1950 he began working with the Soo Line Railroad as telegrapher, working in various towns in North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana.
On February 3, 1952, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Kringlie in Valley City, ND. He served in the United States Army from 1952-1954, as a radio operator in the 63rd Signal Battalion in Austria. After his honorable discharge, he returned to his employment with Soo Line Railroad as a telegrapher and depot agent, working in Harvey, Lucca, and Bordulac, ND.
In 1956, he was granted a leave of absence from the railroad and attended Valley City State University in Valley City. He graduated in 1959 with his B.S. degree and resumed working with Soo Line. He was promoted to trainmaster and worked in Minneapolis, MN, Neenah, WI, and Minot and Enderlin, ND. In 1990, he retired as Assistant Superintendent of the Western Division. They then moved to Fargo in 1993.
Duane was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Eagles, Elks and a life member of the VFW. He loved hunting and fishing with his son, Kent, and watching his grandsons grow into fine young men. He rarely missed the Messiah Men's Bible Study or the early morning Sunwood men's meetings.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine; son, Kent, and his wife, Karen, Minot; daughters, Karen, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Kristi, Bismarck, ND; grandsons, Matthew, and his wife, Anne, and their daughter, Sloane, and Andrew, and his wife, Kendra.
He was preceded in death by parents; brother, Dale Engle; and sister, Joan Engle.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Messiah Lutheran Church or charity of your choice.
Visitation: One hour prior to service.
Funeral Service: Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 1:00 PM, in Messiah Lutheran Church, Fargo.
Interment: Memory Gardens, Valley City, ND.
