Edith M. VanderMeulen

June 21, 1925 — January 3, 2012

Edith May VanderMeulen was born June 21, 1925, in Cicero, NY, to Rector and Edith (Morrill) Place. The family moved to Flint, MI, when Edith was a young girl.

Edith graduated from Flint Northern High School and attended University of Michigan at Ann Arbor for two years. She was united in marriage to Richard A. VanderMeulen on August 24, 1947, in Flint. Edith worked a short time for Michigan Bell Telephone Company.

The family moved to San Francisco, CA, in 1954, and to Washington, DC, in 1963. When they moved to Dayton, OH, in 1976, Edith volunteered many hours at the Cox Arboretum. They moved to Long Beach, CA, in 1987. Following Richard's retirement, they made their home in San Luis Obispo, CA, where Edith worked for Central Coast Fund for Children. They moved to Redmond, WA, in 2003, and settled in Fargo, ND, in 2008.

Edith was a devoted mother to her three children and was active in the community as well as her church. She loved gardening and had her own herb business for many years. She was a member of the National Herb Society.

Richard preceded Edith in death only sixteen days before Edith, on December 18, 2011. She died Tuesday, January 3, 2012, in her home at Touchmark at Harwood Groves, Fargo, at eighty-six years of age.

Edith is survived by her three children, Kendra VanderMeulen (William Snider), Bellevue, WA, Richard VanderMeulen Jr. (Brenda Velasquez), Dove Canyon, CA, and Doug (Linda) VanderMeulen, Fargo; and four grandchildren, Richard Snider, Elizabeth (Jerel) Navarrete, and Michael and Megan VanderMeulen.

In addition to her husband, Edith was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Ken Place; and a sister, Katherine Holen.

The Memorial Service for Edith will be Thursday, January 5, 2012, at 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
