Edmund Ernest Hohenstern, 93, of Moorhead, MN, was granted his angel wings on Friday, September 16, 2016. He passed away peacefully with his wife of 65 years by his side. There will be a visitation held in celebration of Edmunds's life on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, from 5 - 8 PM, with a prayer service at 7:30 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. The funeral will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, at 11 AM, on Thursday September 22, 2016. Burial, with full military honors will be Thursday at 3 PM, in St. John's Belford Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hankinson, ND.
Born April 22, 1923, in Mantador, ND, Edmund was the son to the late Frank and Bertha (Hengel) Hohenstern. Edmund, one of eight children, was a country boy at heart and grew up on their family farm learning lessons about hard work, God, and the importance of family. He worked alongside his brothers helping his father with the farm chores until his father died February 19, 1936. Despite the incredible responsibility of managing the farm and helping to care for their mother, Edmund graduated from Hankinson High School on May 22, 1942.
In 1945, Edmund was drafted for the service with the United States Navy Seabees where he served in the Southwest Pacific until late 1946.
On December 28, 1950 he married his bride, Jean Polda, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Belford Township. The newlyweds lived briefly in Beaver Dam, WI, where Edmund worked for the Monarch Stove Factory. They later moved back to the Moorhead area where he worked as the Assistant Manager at the Kragnes (MN) Farmers Elevator where he retired after working loyally for 44 years.
Edmund loved his family fiercely and taught them through example the meaning of hard work, dedication, humble faith, love of life and the importance of laughter. He had an adventurous heart and enjoyed traveling with Jean, playing cards with his family, meeting his friends for coffee, visiting his children and their families and catching up with his grandkids. He always made time for his great grandchildren and his memory and legacy will surely live through them. Edmund served God through his faith and service as an usher at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. He was also a proud lifetime member of the VFW 1223.
Edmund is survived by his wife Jean; three daughters, Diane (Steve) Anderson of Stafford, VA, Bev Oostenink of Fargo, ND, and Tammie of Champlin, MN; one son, Scott (Robin) Hohenstern of Brooklyn Park, MN; and sister-in-law, Edith Biesenthal of Markesan, WI. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Frederick, Elmer, Earl, Harry, Victor, and Donald Hohenstern; and one sister, Adeline Prochnow.
