Elaine E. Houglum

Elaine E. Houglum, 83, Moorhead, MN, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 18, 2011, in the Sanford Palliative Care Unit, Fargo.

Elaine Ellen Wegner was born on October 1, 1927, to Ervin and Claretta (Bell) Wegner in Perley, MN. She was baptized and confirmed in Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley. Elaine was raised in Perley and graduated from Borup High School in Borup, MN.
On June 10, 1950, Elaine married Ernest J. Houglum at Perley. They made their home on a farmstead just outside of Perley. Ernest passed away in August of 1996.

Elaine was a lifetime member of the Rural Carriers Auxilliary. She was an avid Twins fan and made many trips to Minneapolis to watch them play in person with her daughter, Shirley. Elaine managed the Cenex Station Café for many years. She truly enjoyed serving the travelers and local customers of the Perley area.

Elaine loved to bake. Fresh baked goods were always available and plentiful for anyone who stopped by the farm. She was known for the best lefsa, fattimond, donuts, and kringle. Elaine was an accomplished cake decorator also. Many wedding, birthday, and all occasion cakes were created and enjoyed by many community members.

Elaine's favorite times were spent with her only grandchild, Sarah. They spent many hours baking cookies, working on craft projects, playing games, and just hanging out together. Elaine had a zest for life and was very close to her family.

Elaine is survived by her daughter, Jeanine (David) Brooks, Fargo; granddaughter, Sarah (Andrew) Law, Fargo; sisters, Laurine Matthiesen, San Antonio, TX and Laura Huseby, Round Lake, IL; and brother, Bruce Wegner, Glenmont, NY.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Shirley Houglum and sister, Viola Wang.

Visitation: Wednesday, 5 - 7 PM at Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead.

Funeral Service: Thursday, April 21, 2011, at 2 PM, St. John's Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Burial: Kirkebo Lutheran Cemetery, Perley.
