Helen Fougner of Moorhead, MN, died peacefully in her home on Friday, April 15, 2005.
Helen was born in Ralphton, PA, to Mary and Luka "Luke" Cerka. When Helen was a child the family moved to New York City, NY, where she graduated from high school.
Following graduation, and for the war effort, Helen moved to Baltimore, MD, where she met Gaylord Fougner, the love of her life. Gaylord was an officer in the Navy and his ship was stationed in Baltimore. They exchanged telegrams, while the ship was at sea, to arrange dates when the ship was in port. The romance continued for three years and on April 6, 1946, they married. One year later the newlyweds relocated to Fargo, ND, since Gaylord grew up in North Dakota and appreciated the Midwest.
Helen was a devoted wife and mother to her only child, Mark, who she called her "miracle baby" since she was told she could never have children. The couple lived in Moorhead until Gaylord's retirement in 1983. They then moved to their dream home on Star Lake, Dent, MN. Gaylord passed away June 30, 1987.
Helen enjoyed traveling, sewing, going to casinos, and spending quality time with her son and grandchildren. Helen was known for her feisty, spirited personality and was loved by all who knew her.
