Elizabeth "Bette" Schmidt

Elizabeth Selma Klein was born September 1, 1922, in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Henry and Molly (Dorn) Klein. When Bette was two years of age, the family moved to Englevale, ND, where she was raised and attended school.

Bette moved to Fargo, ND, in 1940, where she graduated from cosmetology school. She worked at Dee's Beauty Salon as well as Don's Beauty Salon, both in Fargo, for many years. Bette married Hugo A. Schmidt, on July 19, 1944, in Hope, ND, and they made their home in Fargo.

After Bette retired, she volunteered over 2000 hours at MeritCare Hospital, tending to the hair of patients while they were hospitalized. Bette and Hugo enjoyed many seasons at their cabin on Big Pine Lake, near Perham, MN. Bette was a longtime and active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Bette died Monday, October 29, 2012, at Sanford Health Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, at ninety years of age.

Bette is survived by her two daughters, Carol (Chris) Kilsdonk, Moorhead, MN, and Sue (Kent) Richey, Orono, MN; four grandchildren, Seth (Merica) Richey, Anna (Abbie) Richey-Allen, Joseph (Jessie) Kilsdonk, and Noah Kilsdonk; four great-grandchildren, Daelyn and Denver Richey, and Reagen and Liam Kilsdonk; and a sister, Esther Mammenga, New Ulm, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo, on March 30, 2010.

Memorials are preferred to Sanford Palliative Care Unit, or The Patrick Swayze Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, Stanford Cancer Center, Development Office, 2700 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park, CA, 94025.

A memorial service will be Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 10:30 AM, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Visitation will be at the church one hour before the service.

Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
