Erling E. Smith

November 11, 1916 — August 13, 2006

Erling Elgie Smith was born November 11, 1916, in Felton, MN, to Albert and Sophie (Larson) Smith. He received his education in rural schools near Felton.


On May 21, 1940, Erling was united in marriage to Ione Oscarson in Moorhead. In his early years, Erling worked with his brother at a sawmill. For most of his later working years, Erling was an employee of the Moorhead School system and was head engineer at the Moorhead Technical School. He retired from the school system after 20 years of service. Erling and Ione have been active members of Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church in Moorhead for many years and have been especially active in the Prime Timers Fellowship group.


An avid hunter, gardener, and fisherman, Erling was always keeping busy by repairing many kinds of engines. He built a home, lake home, garages, and many wood projects for family, friends, and his church. Erling has been a loving husband and father who worked with enthusiasm throughout his life.


For the last several years, Erling has encountered serious health problems that have brought him close to death on several occasions. Most recently, he has been a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home for the last several months before his death on August 13, 2006.


His devoted family includes his wife, Ione of Moorhead; three daughters and their spouses, Carol Lindberg of Fargo, ND, Shirley (David) Gettel of Osage, MN, and Betty (David) Bjornstad of Oakridge, TN; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.


Being the youngest and last of six children, Erling was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Eugene,

The funeral service is on Thursday, August 17, 2006, at 2 PM in Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, Moorhead.
Burial is in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Moorhead.
