Ethan Russell Monshaugen, 16, passed away in his home from a spontaneous aortic dissection.

Ethan was a sophomore at Moorhead High School and was an alumnus of St. Joseph Catholic School.  He found immense joy in his role as the team manager of the MHS Spuds varsity hockey team and actively participated on the golf team, cherishing being with his friends/teammates. Both of those teams were his world, and he valued each teammate as a friend. In addition to his athletic pursuits, Ethan actively engaged in his faith and was an altar server at St. Joseph Church. One of the things he was looking forward to was being confirmed.

How can someone even begin to describe Ethan?  He was kind to everyone.  From the time he was a baby he had the biggest smile and is still known for his big smile. Ethan was so witty and funny, he could come up with the best one-liners and comebacks and he was able to connect with everyone and anyone, from an infant to any adult.  Ethan excelled in school, he was excited to embark on college courses next school year and was contemplating his post-graduation endeavors.  His profound love for his friends was evident and they are a major reason he loved and thrived in life.  From his classmates, the varsity hockey team, and golf team, he loved them all.  They all meant so much to him, and he would light up just talking about them.

Within his family circle, Ethan was very close to everyone. The oldest of five siblings, he was each of his brothers’ best friends, and his three little sisters had him wrapped around their fingers.  Ethan also had a very special bond with his parents and his stepfather, all in a unique way that we all carry in our memories and hearts.  Family trips with his mom, stepdad, and siblings going to Florida, Arizona, Medora, his grandparents Devils Lake home, and many other places, brought him much joy.  One of his favorite summer activities was going to the Monshaugen family reunion on Lake Mille Lacs where he got to fish, go tubing, and play bean bags with family.  Ethan’s many aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and great-grandparents loved him so much and enjoyed him immensely.

Words cannot even describe how much Ethan meant to each and every person whose lives he touched.  His impact was profound, leaving a lasting mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.  Ethan is so loved and will be missed by everyone.  The enduring memories he bestowed upon us will luckily last a lifetime and be with all of us forever.

Ethan will be deeply and dearly missed by his parents, Cory Monshaugen and Jenna (Marcus) Askvig; siblings, Nolan (14), Cam (12), Quinn (7), Eden (4), and Isla (2); grandparents, Doug and Kris Monshaugen, Brad and Nadine Schanilec, and Donny and Jody Askvig; godparents, Jess (Kyle) Freud and Russell (Kate) Schanilec; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as many friends.

He will be greatly missed by all.
