Eugene E. McManus

Eugene E. McManus, 84, of rural Detroit Lakes, MN, died January 26, 2014, in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River and his family.

Gene was born in Fargo, ND, to Margaret and Phillip McManus, July 24, 1929. He attended high school in Dilworth, MN, and upon graduation began working for Burlington Northern Railroad. Gene married Dorine "Toni" Evenson on September 20, 1956, and together they raised two sons, Phillip and Paul. During the family's years in Dilworth, Gene served as mayor and as a city councilman. He was also involved in the Dilworth School District where he served on the school board. Gene was president of BLE Lodge 202 and commander of the American Legion. He retired from BNSF in 1991 as a locomotive engineer. After retirement, Gene and Toni moved to the lake.

Eugene loved the lakes and the great outdoors. He especially enjoyed his time at West McDonald Lake and his trips to the Oregon Coast.

He was blessed with a loving family who was with him to his last day. He especially enjoyed the recent time he spent with his granddaughter, Shelby, who took part in his care. Gene was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Eugene was preceded in death by his son, Paul; his sister, Mary; brothers, Bill and John; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Toni; his son, Phillip, and daughter in law, Lynne McManus, of Enderlin, ND; grandson, Sean McManus, of Wahpeton; granddaughter, Shelby McManus and her partner, Dawson Rasmussen of Fargo; sister, Katherine, of Dilworth; and brother, Bob, of Des Moines, WA.

Memorial Service Friday, January 31, 2014, at 1 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.
