Evelyn Lenore Johnson was born August 14, 1908, in Portland, ND, to J.E. and Olga (Koppang) Johnson. Evelyn graduated from high school in Thompson, ND, and from Mayville (ND) State College with a teaching degree. She taught in Emerado, ND. Evelyn married Hans Sylvester in 1928 and they lived and farmed at Thompson. Following his death in 1936, Evelyn and the family moved to Hatton, ND. While in Hatton, Evelyn was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron. She taught in Jamestown, ND, from 1944 to 1963, when she married William Spotts. They made their home in Moorhead, MN. William died in 1976 and Evelyn continued to reside in Moorhead. She entered Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, in May 2001, where she died Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at ninety-five years of age.
Evelyn is lovingly survived by her daughter, Jean (George) Stenehjem, Edina, MN; a son, Bill (Ollie) Spotts, Bismarck, ND; daughter-in-law, Betty Sylvester, McLean, VA; three granddaughters, Greta (Clifford) Hardwick, Kirsten (Martin) Shumway and Debbie (Dave) Bjornson; three grandsons, John Stenehjem, Hans (Katrina) Sylvester and Steve (Joy) Spotts; seven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, a son, Christopher Sylvester and two brothers, Vernon and Duane Johnson preceded Evelyn in death.
Visitation will be Friday, September 26, 2003, from 6 - 8 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. The funeral will be Saturday, September 27, 2003, at 11 AM in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead. Burial will be Saturday at 3 PM in St. John Cemetery, Hatton. Memorials are preferred to either Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or Eventide Lutheran Home.
