Frances M. Smith, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her family and under the loving care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Born on April 28, 1925, in Lawton, Okla, to Willis and Birdie (Lee) Hayes. Frances grew up in Duncan, Okla with her nine sisters and one brother.
On May 12, 1941, Frances was united in marriage to Billy G. Smith. They lived in Japan for five years while Billy served in the Army, and with his military commitment, they resided in many states. In 1954, they moved to Moorhead and raised their family.
Frances was an exceptional homemaker who welcomed everyone with open arms and a warm smile. She will always be remembered for her culinary talents. Her caramel rolls were nothing short of a delight, and during Christmas time, it was customary to receive a delivery of her homemade chocolate fudge that she lovingly shared with everyone. Her skills in the kitchen were truly unmatched.
Family meant the world to Frances, and she took great pride in being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished each moment spent with them and was there for every milestone and triumph in their lives. She considered herself fortunate to see her great and great-great grandchildren!
Frances's faith played an integral role in her life. As one of the charter members of The Lutheran Church of Christ the King in Moorhead, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her church. Over the years, Frances actively participated in numerous lady circles and made many lifelong friendships along the way.
Frances will be remembered and missed by her daughter, Judy Johnson; one sister, Joy Foster; seven grandchildren (whom affectionally called her “Oma”), Michael, David, Kathy, Tricia, Lisa, Kristopher and Chelsey; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Billy; three daughters, Nancy, Linda and Barbara; son-in-law, Ken Johnson; grandson, Nicholas Johnson and nine siblings.
Frances's life was one that exuded warmth, compassion, and genuine care for those around her. She touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible imprint on their hearts. Her memory will forever be cherished by family and friends alike.
Funeral Service for Frances will be held on August 14, 2023, at 11:00 AM in The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior. Frances will be laid to rest next to her husband Billy in Duncan Municipal Cemetery, Duncan, Okla.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Sanford Medical Center; along with Corey and Staff with Hospice of the Red River Valley for their gentle and wonderful care they gave Frances during her last days.
