Fred A. Henning, 93, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 9, 2008, in Bottolfson Chapel of Eventide at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be after 9:30 AM.
Fred was born on September 14th, 1914 in Fargo, ND to Albert and Petra (Bredesen) Henning. After graduating from NDAC (NDSU) he worked for the Railway Express Agency (REA) for 39 years in Fargo, Moorhead and Bemidji - interrupted by a three year stint in the Army during WW II (Red Bull 34th Division). Fred married his sweetheart Ollie Rue on October 16th, 1941, in Moorhead.
Fred was an engaging fellow and lived a very full, rewarding and loving life with Ollie, both of them treasuring their many relatives and the many friends they made throughout their lives. They were active members of Bethesda Lutheran Church for many years participating in many organizations there. Fred loved hamming it up in many acting venues - community theater, water shows and vaudeville skits. One of his most memorable performances was the re-creation of Chief Seattle's speech on preserving the land. Fred also enjoyed the physical aspect of living, being active in swimming & diving (Island Park and the Red River), basketball (Powers Coffee Shop), fishing (and puttering) at his Pelican Lake cabin and was a member of the YMCA for over 60 years. Later in life he did much volunteering like Meals on Wheels, giving parishioners rides to church, and being a mentor for youth.
He is survived by his wife Ollie, daughter, Jeanne Stever, Minneapolis, MN; sons, Larry Henning, St Louis, MO; and Terry (Mary) Henning, Burke, VA; 9 grandchildren: Jill Stever-Zeitlin, Christopher Stever, Maren Stever, Amy Davis, Cory Henning, Jeffrey Henning, Casey Henning, Allyson Henning, and Erin Henning; and 8 great grandchildren: Benjamin Stever-Zeitlin, Samantha Stever-Zeitlin, Hannah Kloninger-Stever, Maggie Kloninger-Stever, Zoe Henning, Landon Henning, Zachary Davis, Taylor Davis; and many dear friends and relatives. Fred was preceded in death by his ten siblings, Knute, Harold, Fritz, Roy, Agnes, Gudrun, Ruth, Doris, Claire, and Lil.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to cancer or macular degeneration research organizations.
