George Tokheim, age 98, Moorhead, MN, died Friday, May 15, 2009, in Innovis Health, Fargo, ND after suffering a major stroke.
George was born to Jacob and Kristina (Eitrheim) Tokheim, on September 29, 1910, on a farm near the town site of Loma, ND, in Cavalier County. He grew up on the family farm and attended a country school for eight grades.
George learned the farming business and also became a very good mechanic who had a knack for finding ways to fix or create machinery parts or machines for use on the farm or in his shop. In his early years, George did some hunting and trapping and in his mid-years, he learned to fly a Piper Cub airplane.
During WW II, he helped the war effort in the winters off the farm as a laborer at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, CA. He also helped build ships in Washington State.
George continued farming and went on to do custom combining, including some years on the wheat harvest on the southern plains. He joined the Peace Corp and completed the training but had to quit because of a health condition. George acquired earth moving equipment and did many jobs in his home area. In later years, he served as a security guard for missile sites in northeastern North Dakota.
George loved to travel and once flew around the world, visiting his former Peace Corp comrades. He made many, many trips to Norway to visit relatives. He loved family events and was always a good listener and always willing to give good conservative adv
George is survived by his sister, Inger (Tokheim) Skare, Moorhead; niece, Marion Skare, Moorhead, nephew, Galen Skare, Fergus Falls, MN, nephew, Orlan (Evelyn) Loraas, Fargo, niece, Carolyn (James) Holmlund, Billings, MT, niece, Eunice Bjornstad, Walhalla
Visitation for George will be Tuesday, May 19, 2009, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
His funeral will be Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 1 PM, at Faith Lutheran Church, Hampden, ND.
Burial will be in Loma Cemetery, Loma, ND.
